Wechselpräpositionen
Wechselpräpositionen are prepositions which change between the accusative and dative case.
(There are also other prepositions which don't change between the two cases, and just stay one or the other. Here they are: Akkusativpräpositionen and Dativpräpositionen)

Wechselpräpositionen:

an -- at
auf -- on top of
hinter -- behind
in -- in
neben -- next to
über -- over
unter -- under
vor -- in front of
zwischen -- between

What changes?

The prepositional phrase following the preposition changes between accusative and dative.

Where or whereto?

The case of the prepositional phrase depends on whether or not there is action involved.
If there is no movement involved (where) --> then the preposition would be
dative.
i.e. I am in front of the car. -- Ich bin vor
dem Auto.
If there
is movement involved (whereto) --> then the preposition would be accusative.
i.e. I am running in front of the car. -- Ich jogge vor das Auto.
